My work
I have a niche, personable and extremely varied practice including resolving claims to British citizenship, assisting victims of domestic violence, overseas adoptions and entry and stay of non-British children, gay relationships, cases involving human rights, EU cases and deportation proceedings against foreign criminals.
I have a wealth of experience in making applications in all areas of immigration law and in conducting appeals and Judicial Reviews.
I also do family and civil work which means that I can advise in other related and relevant areas where needed.
These are just some examples of the very wide range of cases in which I have acted.
About me
I was called to the Bar in 1992 and began my career in Criminal Defence which provided me with invaluable advocacy experience. However, in around 1996 I started practising in immigration law doing mostly asylum cases from all over the world. Shortly after that immigration law became my main and favourite area of practice and my practice soon expanded into other areas. In 2004 I was accredited by the General Council of the Bar as an Immigration Practitioner.
I have not always been a barrister and my first career was in music so I not only have extensive experience of the world of law but also of life. There is an article about me here:

What my clients say
"Ms Longhurst-Woods has acted for me for a number of years. She firstly succeeded via a Judicial Review in obtaining me leave to remain as the spouse of my British husband and later she successfully completed my application for indefinite leave to remain. More recently she won my daughter’s appeal against the Entry Clearance Officer’s refusal of her application to join me permanently in the UK
I would highly commend her to anyone needing immigration advice and representation as she is an extremely experienced immigration Barrister who offers a very high level of professional service" - Ms L. Mulele Feb 2019
"I instructed Ms Lesley Longhurst-Woods to handle my recent appeal against the refusal of leave to remain in unmarried partner category. She advised me thoroughly and was very clear. She was very strong when representing me at the hearing and we succeeded. She is clearly an extremely experienced and high quality immigration practitioner who is hardworking and conscientious. She is an outstanding Counsel and I would highly recommend her services" - K.O. EZUGWU
"Ms Longhurst-Woods has acted for myself and members of my family for several years and has always succeeded in achieving the goal at hand. She succeeded in obtaining indefinite leave to remain for myself and my young son and most recently, after an uphill struggle due to the changes reaped by only being able to win a visit appeal on human rights grounds, she won my daughter’s and grandchild’s visit visa appeals at the Upper Tribunal. She is a barrister who is prepared to go the extra mile and who is supportive in the face of adversity. I am happy to recommend her to others who need someone to fight their corner in these difficult times" - Mrs Grace Lamaro, East London, Feb 2019
“The level of assistance from Lesley was second to none. From the beginning to the end I have felt comfortable and secure in her judgement and I have nothing but praise and recommendation for her professional ability. Lesley won my Judicial Review against all odds and succeeded in persuading the Secretary of State to grant me leave to remain. My heartfelt appreciation. I would definitely recommend her to anyone with a complex case which seems unwinnable but which has justice, reason and fairness on its side.” - Miss Joy Opute (Manchester).
“Thanks so much for getting me through this incredible journey of getting indefinite leave to remain in the UK. Words cannot express the feeling of not having to fear deportation and separation from my family. Not only did you strongly represent me with my complicated case, but you also showed immense knowledge and strategic approach to every facet of the process.” – Milly Grace Lamaro
“Ms Longhurst-Woods was brilliant and totally professional in advising me on what evidence was needed and with her in depth representations she succeeded in persuading the ECO to change his decision thereby allowing my young son to join me without the need of appealing.” - Lucy W. Chidothe
“We tried various Solicitors to help us to remain in the United Kingdom and have spent a lot of money in doing so, but with no positive results. We were about to give up when we came across Ms Woods website on the internet and contacted her. Ms Woods was very helpful and we felt at ease. She was very effective and we never doubted her ability to get us our visas. It was a pleasure to work with her. We didn’t have to wait long before we received the good news that we were granted discretionary leave to remain in the UK on compassionate grounds. It was a very stressful time and we were over the moon! She seemed to make the impossible possible and we are very thankful to her. We have made use of her services for the past 5½ years and she never disappointed us. We would like to use her services again when it is time to apply for permanent residency and we would recommend her services to anybody who needs an Immigration Solicitor. We have recommended her to our friends and they were also very satisfied with her service.” - Chris and Dina Beukes

"I am writing this testimonial for Leslie Longhurst-Woods, I hired Leslie on a Direct Access Basis as the Barrister My Solicitor retained was unacceptable. Leslie made me feel that my life was important as I was in a dark place mentally being held by Immigration. I contemplated taking my life because it was unbearable. Leslie always responded and took my calls, she spent loads of time on the phone with me speaking about my case and not even charging for her time.
I got refused immigration bail on the first attempt because of my previous barrister. This time I choose Leslie and she took a few days to get well acquainted with my case and all the strong points. We had a two hour telephone conversation and she got all her questions put through to me.
My Hearing she was well prepared and spoke like how a barrister should speak, she had an answer for every question the judged asked and she defended me against the home office objection. The Judge in my case stated to me in the hearing that reading me on paper and my criminal history he couldn’t see himself granting me bail, but he said your barrister has convince me that bail is warranted. Leslie was like a pit-bull in the court room she was ready for them. I am so proud of her and what she did for me to have my bail granted. I am now back at home with my family sitting on my sofa having a glass of wine all because of this beautiful, kind, amazing, efficient, professional, honest woman.
If you do not choose her then you are not right in your head. Sorry to Say. Leslie will be my barrister to help me win my asylum case. Our Journey Continues." - Neil Moore, 30th of June 2021.
"Our spouse visa application was refused in October 2021 and we thought that would be the end of our journey to be together here in the UK. My husband was still stuck in Nigeria. We were given 28 days to appeal and was completely lost on what to do next. We searched online looking for a legal representative to appeal our case and God led us to Ms Woods. We were worried about the costs, thinking it would be too expensive for us to instruct a direct access counsel but after contacting Ms Woods, we arranged a three way video call where Ms Woods reassured us on the chances of winning our case and explained the process as well as the costs and how to make payments.
We were advised on each stage of the appeal with what we needed to do then Ms Woods promptly drafted the grounds of appeal and we were able to meet up with the deadline.
After submission of the appeal bundle and skeleton argument, Ms Woods continued to support us and reassure us until the hearing date. Before the hearing, Ms Woods called and coached us on what to expect and how to present ourselves on the day.
On the actual hearing date, Ms Woods really amazed us. She went in there with guns blazing and convinced the judge to overturn the refusal.
We then ran into further difficulties and Ms Woods again went above and beyond and convinced the ECO to grant the visa. We were sure of our success due to her professional approach, determination and knowledge.
We will be forever grateful to Ms Woods. From the onset we knew we had the best representative in our corner. Ms Woods worked tirelessly and thoroughly to make our reunion possible. We have now settled comfortably and will be instructing Ms Woods to assist us with our Visa extension.
